One hundred miles northeast of Venice in the Dolomite mountain range, the town is one of five villages snuggled along the slope of a mountain called Sovramonte (higher mountain). At an elevation of 2,225 feet, Faller is surpassed in altitude only by the village of Aune at 2,585 feet. The other three villages—Servo, Zerzoi, and Sorriva—are all at lower elevations. The Dolomites have a special character which distinguishes them from other Alpine glacial and rock forms, such as Mont Blanc or the Matterhorn.

From Faller going west, the main highway leads to Trento through the Val Sugana and enters the dolomitic group of Brenta. To the east is Vittorio Veneto, where the decisive battle of World War I was fought, and further east is Udine, the capital of Friuli. One hundred and twenty miles east of Faller on the Yugoslavian border are the city of Gorizia and the Julian Alps. One hundred miles south of Faller is the city of Venice. Faller may be reached by taking Highway 50 from either Feltre or Trento and then following the provincial road for seven miles through Fonzazo to a fork in the road.

12 In Italy the size and type of farm as well as the land tenure conditions vary from region to region. The greatest difference is from north to south. In Faller, as in the north of Italy generally, there are many privately owned small farms of twelve acres. In addition, some land is rented on a cash basis by farmers. 13 Farming in Faller, as in agricultural zones throughout Italy, is labor intensive, and capital is scarce. 14 Faller families practice subsistence farming combined with wage labor in factories in Feltre or Lamon.
