Hydro. Large scale production of electricity has been investigated at river sites adjacent to the main population centres. The probability of earthquakes is finite and could rule out large installations. Foundations present a problem in the friable bedrock. Small scale installations (5 - 20kW) would be feasible at sites where village and river were adjacent. Seven such sites exist. Hydro install ations in common with wind are expensive to install but have long lives and provide a constant power source, (Watt Committee, 1985).
O Abundant wood reserves could provide the basis for a charcoal industry and demonstrates the potential for an energy forest. o Hydro energy resources needed further collation and assessment. o Recent wave energy proposals for adjacent countries hold promise for application in Vanuatu. 3% children. About half of the adult male population are farmers. This figure is comparatively lower due to small land-holdings per family unit, also many adults travel frequently to nearby towns for employment. There are no local industries in all these villages. Farming is carried out during the rainy season only, and during the rest of the year, the people are engaged in trading or crafts like the making of local fans, caps, mats, thread, etc. Water supply is a major problem in all these villages.
