The 3rd overseas convention on Composite Interfaces (ICCI-III) used to be held lower than the auspecies of ASM foreign, The Aluminum corporation of the USA (Alcoa), The Edison Polymer Innovation Co. (EPIC), Case Western Reserve college, Nippon Glass Fiber Co., Nitto Boseki Co., place of work of Naval Reserach (ONR), SAMPE Japan, Teijin Co., Mobay Co., Union Carbide Co., and Vetrotex Sain-Gobain. The underlying philosophy of the convention remains to be the merchandising of basic figuring out of the constitution and position of composite interfaces. With the expansion of composite interface reviews, the learn course evidently alterations from characterization and realizing of interfacial constitution to controlling this constitution. as a result, the convention was once subtitled, "Controlled Interphase Structure." The really unusual word "interphase" is used to stress the interfacial sector whose houses are assorted from the majority. the significance of the interphase to the mechanochemical houses has been speedily well-known between composite researchers lately. The convention integrated 9 classes. No concurrent classes have been deliberate a result of powerful curiosity between panicipants and organizers to intennix researchers from assorted disciplines. Papers awarded have been redistributed in Pans I throught V. due to this, either the convention and court cases should not geared up in line with the conventional disciplines or fabrics, yet quite round concepts.

Range of graphite fiber diameters. 5 CONCLUSIONS Graphite fibers contain significant surface quantities of oxygen present as C-OH, C-O-C, () C = 0) and -C02 - which appear to be responsible for strong adhesion to the polymer matrix. For example, PMR-15 composites which exhibited the highest short beam shear strength contained fibers with the highest initial oxygen concentration. After aging for 500 hrs at 316°C in flowing air, graphite fiber/PMR-15 composites retain 80% of RT and shear strength and up to 25% improvement in the 316°C shear strength.

However, the simularity of surface composition of the aged composites (Thble 11) suggests that failure for the three composites occurred more in the resin than at the interface. PMR-15 composite over for the T40R (u)/PMR-15 composite, and only a marginally greater strength over G40-7oo (u)/PMR-15 composite. This suggests that the 30 fracture composite surface composition as determined by ESCA is not a good discriminator of the interfacial properties of the composite. However, SEM analyses (see below) of the fractured surface suggests that a greater degree of mterfacial failure occurs in the unaged and aged T40R (u)/PMR-15 composite system, relative to the Celion 6K (u)/PMR-15 composite.
