Range of graphite fiber diameters. 5 CONCLUSIONS Graphite fibers contain significant surface quantities of oxygen present as C-OH, C-O-C, () C = 0) and -C02 - which appear to be responsible for strong adhesion to the polymer matrix. For example, PMR-15 composites which exhibited the highest short beam shear strength contained fibers with the highest initial oxygen concentration. After aging for 500 hrs at 316°C in flowing air, graphite fiber/PMR-15 composites retain 80% of RT and shear strength and up to 25% improvement in the 316°C shear strength.
However, the simularity of surface composition of the aged composites (Thble 11) suggests that failure for the three composites occurred more in the resin than at the interface. PMR-15 composite over for the T40R (u)/PMR-15 composite, and only a marginally greater strength over G40-7oo (u)/PMR-15 composite. This suggests that the 30 fracture composite surface composition as determined by ESCA is not a good discriminator of the interfacial properties of the composite. However, SEM analyses (see below) of the fractured surface suggests that a greater degree of mterfacial failure occurs in the unaged and aged T40R (u)/PMR-15 composite system, relative to the Celion 6K (u)/PMR-15 composite.
