Basketball offers similar rewards for balance. To my way of thinking, the perfect basketball team would feature five all-around players, all of whom could shoot out the lights, dribble circles around defenders, make the perfect pass to the open man, rebound like demons, run the floor, and, of course, play defense. Wouldn't it be nice to coach that kind of team? Unfortunately, there are only so many Michael Jordans, Magic Johnsons, Larry Birds, and Oscar Robertsons. You're blessed if you have one of them, much less five.

I have adopted that system. Every coach should. That's what this book is all about. Zone defenses should be beaten. I want to help you get the job done. Take the correct approach, and your offense can generate high percentage shots. You can free your top shooters and get the ball to your inside players where they can do the most damage. You can create three-on-two, two-on-one, and one-on-zero advantages on the offensive boards. Think of yourself as responding to the challenge of changing times, much as a corporation continually adapts and modernizes to satisfy a changing market.

Balance is also important at the two forward positions. One of the forwards, usually the smaller of the two, should be competent from the perimeter as a shooter and passer. Like the shooting guard, he should be an accomplished spot shooter, usually from the wing or corner areas. Also, the small forward should be able to move effectively without the ball and possess an effective one-on-one game. Moving to the outside and inside is an effective weapon for the ideal small forward. Flashing into the lane to the low-, mid-, and high-post areas will lead to post-up situations and turnaround jump shots.
