For instance, he wrote a thesis on the self-sufficient state (economics), earned a Teachers College certificate, and wrote a book on economics that unfortunately was destroyed in a fire. He earned his master of arts degree in 1917. Writing was now a part of his life.

Broun condemned not only the system but certain individuals such as Governor Fuller who had the courtroom and subsequently the verdict in their hands. Broun questioned whether those in high places should have the power to condemn others. Broun’s form of advocacy journalism was more inclusive, thought-provoking, and literary than other forms of advocacy journalism practiced at the time. Broun, who could criticize as well as praise a position, a decision, or an individual, had few rivals. Broun died of pneumonia in 1939.
