It is possible that too strong pressure from the liberal urban North on the rural conservative South may ultimately react on southern liberals in such a way that the latter can no longer act as initiators of social change in an equalitarian direction. There is also the danger that southern as well as northern white people, with the reforms they have accomplished, may become too com­ plaisant and not continue to push for betterment in race relations until Negroes and whites share not only equal economic opportunity but equal social opportunity.

Theoretical system-makers constructed their sociological empires and fought their rival empire-builders for survival and dominance. Illustrations, well-tailored for their purpose, served for evidence, the relaxed comfort of the armchair for the rigour of field study, and philosophical and broad general theories which could not be tested, often for sound method. Those sociologists who were dissatisfied with the in­ ability of untested theories to yield solid answers whose truth could be validated turned to research and field studies to look for their answers.

These people tend to be civic leaders, to take strong moral positions, to have in­ fluence and power, and to support civic institutions such as the school and the church which bring self-respect and credit to the whole Negro group. They also tend to be the source from which many improvements of Negro life are being introduced into the whole Negro group. This same group is increasingly drawing closer to the uppermiddle-class people of the white group, not so much through ethical reasons as because of similar interests and political and economic forces.
